Looking 30 years back we can perceive the evolution of the Maritime Training Institute. "The Cadet Academy" established by The Great Eastern Shipping Bombay which was inaugurated by Mrs. Asha Vasant Sheth, on 31st March 1975. A resonance is observed again when fabricating the current training Institute at Lonavala. In 2003, the Cadet Academy was closed down and Mr. Vesuna, Advisor Shipping Division of the company was entrusted in August 2004, with the task of creating a new Institute for Maritime Training. He did an excellent job in record time and "The Great Eastern Institute of Maritime Studies" came into existence in 2006 for conducting Pre Sea Courses. It is spread over an expense of about 18 acres of land acquired at Tungarli, Lonavala. It s found among verdant, scenic & serene surroundings of Lonavala, located about 106 kms southeast of Mumbai. The first batch of IGNOU/IMU - DGS 1 - Year Pre - Sea Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) Course for Trainee Nautical Officers (TNO), commenced on 2nd.January 2006. Simultaneously for Trainee Marine Engineers (TME), the first batch of 8-months Graduate Mechanical Engineers (GME) Course commenced on 1st.June 2006.

The institute is ISO 9001:2008 certified by the Indian Registrar of Shipping with effect from November 2009. Moreover, the Institute was benched marked by CRISIL & awarded Grade 1 (outstanding) in December 2006.

Objective: On successful completion of this 8 months shore based comprehensive training immediately followed by 4 months on - board ship training,the TME undergoes a further 6 months sailing on board ships as an assistant watchkeeping Engineer. Thereafter, on successful completion of assessment,examination and certification,the Candidate should be Competant to safely carry out the Watch Keeping duties as an Engineer Officer at Operational level on board a ship and be fully conversant with the proper maintenance and operation of machinery and equipment fitted on ships.

Presently we have a sanctioned capacity for 6 batches of 240 candidates, i.e. 3 Nautical batches (120) and 3 GME batches (120) at any one time. Apart from meeting the requirement of Nautical & Engineer officers for GESCO, we are also providing Nautical & Engine trainees to Marlow Navigation, Cyprus; Holland America Line & Goodwood Ship Management, Singapore & Seaspan,Canada,Essar Shipping and our Offshore Company GIL.

Maritime Oriented Training
In addition to the syllabus, Training is imparted in the following areas, to both deck & engineering cadets such as - Physical fitness, Parade, Swimming, Outdoor games and extra curricular activities. This is to ensure that every cadet acquires the mental, moral and physical attributes essential for development as a Nautical or Engineer Officer.

Scope Of Training
The One Year Shore Based cum on-board ship training is based on the requirements of regulations and Table A III/1 of the STCW Code, as amended. The training imparts minimum knowledge, skill and experience for certification of an Engineer Officer in Charge of a Watch in a traditionally manned engine room and periodically unmanned engine room on seagoing ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 KW propulsion power or more.

Methodology Of Training
The DNS Course instructional packages for I st to V th Semesters in the form of books/booklets are provided by IGNOU / IMU to individual learners. Our Training Institute delivers the theoretical and practical components of the first two semesters of the programme, which are fully residential in nature and are organized in face-to-face mode. We shall also be responsible for administering On-Board Ship Training (Distance Learning Program) DURING Semesters III, IV and V. The medium of instructions for the programme is English. Programme Duration - minimum duration 3 years,maximum duration of 6 years is permissible to complete the DNS programme.
From March 2011 we commenced 4 months, Training of Electro - Techinical Officer (ETOs), as approved by D.G.Shipping and on compliance with STCW 2010 requirement.The Institute also provides all seven basic DGS approved training courses for Seafarers as for chapter V & VI of STCW 2010 Code.
